Do-It-Yourself POE

For our Access Point Project we needed a POE adapter. www.NYCWireless.net tells how and this is basically a clone of their info with the added value of part numbers and suppliers for those people who'd like everything appear on their doorstep for reasonable cost. The full PoE standard is quite involved and does much more than suggested here.

0. POE parts in bags. Short ethernet cable we'll cut to save time and money. 05. Hook the two connectors up as straight-thru 10. No turning back now! Stripe one side before cutting 14. Testing, testing, testing! 15a. All done - the completed POE adapter. See all 17 photos

Here's an order for a single POE from www.greatcables.com. I'm sure others have similar parts and I would welcome some alternative suppliers:

Part # Description Price
C5E03WT 3 foot Cat 5 Molded $1.95
SMM-UE2-WT Dual Port Surface Mount Box Loaded $8.66
SMM-UE1-WT Single Port Surface Mount Box Loaded $4.73

The total price before shipping works out around $15 per adapter - assuming you cut the cord on the plugpack instead of using extra power plugs. Note that Fry's has identical equipment but its almost twice the price.

10 Mar 2004 update: Another supplier that works out much cheaper is: http://deepsurplus.site.yahoo.net. Their prices / part numbers are:

Part # Description Price
CB241-1BL 1ft Blue Cat 5E Molded Patch Cable $1.47
CN394-2 Two Port Surface Mount Housing, White $1.25
CN394-1 One Port Surface Mount Housing, White $0.85
CN380 Cat 5E Keystone Jack - White Toolless - 2 needed $1.47
CN380-BL Cat 5E Keystone Jack - Blue Toolless $1.47

This brings the price per POE adapter down to about $6.75 before tax shipping (their shipping is reasonable).
