Careful with Self-Effacement

Self-effacement not always best in biz.

The other night, I was chatting at a Speaker Co-op meeting with Sherry Prindle, marketing consultant, coach, speaker, and trainer. We talked about my opt-in freebie—what I give free to people who sign up (the form is on the right side of this page) to be on my biz e-mail list. I told her the freebie has three items: The first two are helpful info from sources other than me and the third item is about the process I help others learn. I said I did that because not only are the first two tips really helpful, but that way the freebie isn’t all about me.

Sherry asked, “Why wouldn’t it be all about you?” and added that those people had signed up to be on my e-mail list. I was being proud about being somewhat self-effacing, both of which—the pride and the self-effacement—may not serve me well in this instance.

Where are you being self-effacing? Is it working well or not?
